PHS enjoys an outstanding music program. Students who participate in our choral, band, and ensemble programs participate in a full spectrum of the high school experience. From half-time shows to formal concerts and festivals to band trips, students grow their musicality as they practice and perfect their craft.
Spartan Marching Band
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Concurrent participation in the Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band
When you are a member of the Spartan Marching Band, you join us in a tradition of excellence. Marching band participants devote many hours of practice and training during the summer months in preparation for fall competitions, parades, festivals, and to deliver spectacular halftime performances during the fall football season.
Marching band provides students the opportunity to learn the discipline of marching techniques and the wide variety of music associated with this type of group. On occasion, some members of the Spartan Marching Band may perform in the Pep Band, a more casual format for events such as pep rallies, certain away games, and parades.
We expect all students enrolled in the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band to attend the summer band camp rehearsals. We traditionally hold these rehearsals during the last two weeks of August, before Labor Day weekend. Students will receive the exact dates and times in June.
Wind Ensemble
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Audition and teacher recommendation
Students in Wind Ensemble possess advanced skills and techniques as well as a strong desire to make music at the highest level possible. Students accepted into Wind Ensemble receive honors credit, as advanced level work is required of all participants for their entrance audition as well as their participation.
Wind Ensemble students perform a repertoire of the best and most advanced literature available to the wind band. If their schedule permits, we invite Wind Ensemble students to also take Symphonic Band as a class, perhaps performing on another instrument.
All Wind Ensemble students are members of the Spartan Marching Band and participate in the instrumental lesson program.
Symphonic Band
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Making music is for everyone, and the Symphonic Band provides students with the experience of playing in a large instrumental group. Students perform pieces from a variety of music literature while exploring higher-level technical and expressive skills.
All Symphonic Band students are members of the Spartan Marching Band and participate in the instrumental lesson program.
