English as a Second Language Program

We offer a high intensity program providing multiple periods of ESL instruction each day to support and expedite the social and academic language development of our Multilingual Learners.

ESL Classes

Our courses include:

  • Beginner ESL
  • Intermediate ESL
  • Advanced ESL
  • Subject Reinforcement (content area support) for ESL
  • American History and Culture for ELLs I and II (United States History I and II for ESL) *co-taught by the ESL teacher and an American History specialist instructor

Each ESL class applies the four WIDA domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with extensive grammar and academic as well as social vocabulary.

Languages

Our students come from all over the world and speak languages including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Malayalam, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Urdu.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Qualified ESL juniors (grade 11) and seniors (grade 12) are admitted to the English as a Second Language Honor Society under the World Language Honor Society program. This is an academic honor as a result of a student’s development in the English language, academic achievement, and eagerness to mentor new students.

Instructor

Our PHS ESL teacher is certified in multiple subject areas including English as a Second Language, English, Elementary Education, and Social Studies, and has taught in the United States and internationally.
